You Would Never Have Guessed

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76 , which is odd, because he always looked like he was 76. (DOB: 6/27/27 ) His death reminded me of the following story.

Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside 3- and 4-star generals at Arlington National Cemetery ... His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else. Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer:

I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.

In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima . There is only one higher Naval award... The Medal Of Honor!

If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery..

Dialog from 'The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson': His guest was Lee Marvin, Johnny said, 'Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.

'Yeah, yeah... I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting' shot hauling you down. But, Johnny, at Iwo I served under the bravest man I ever knew.... We both got the Cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach and directed his troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men's safety was more important than his own life.

That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me, lying on my belly on the litter and said, 'Where'd they get you Lee?' 'Well Bob... If you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!' Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew. The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan. You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo.'

On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who just passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth. But Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-five confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat

After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister and therefore a pacifist. Vowing to never harm another human and also dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm. America's real heroes don't flaunt what they did; they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect and the freedoms that we all enjoy. Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst. Often, they are the ones you'd least suspect, but would most like to have on your side if anything ever happened. Take the time to thank anyone that has fought for our freedom.. With encouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr.Rogers.

The senior citizen discount!

The senior citizen discount

"$5.37." That's what the kid behind the counter at Taco Bell said to me. I dug into my pocket and pulled out some lint and two dimes and something that used to be a Jolly Rancher..... Having already handed the kid a five-spot, I started to head back out to the truck to grab some change when the kid with the Emo hairdo said the harshest thing anyone has ever said to me. He said, "It's OK. I'll just give you the senior citizen discount."

I turned to see who he was talking to and then heard the sound of change hitting the counter in front of me. "Only $4.68" he said cheerfully. I stood there stupefied. I am 48, not even 50 yet, a mere child! Senior citizen?

I took my burrito and walked out to the truck wondering what was wrong with Emo. Was he blind? As I sat in the truck, my blood began to boil. Old? Me?

I'll show him, I thought. I opened the door and headed back inside. I strode to the counter, and there he was waiting with a smile.

Before I could say a word, he held up something and jingled it in front of me, like I could be that easily distracted! What am I now? A toddler?

"Dude! Can't get too far without your car keys, eh?" I stared with utter disdain at the keys. I began to rationalize in my mind. "Leaving keys behind hardly makes a man elderly! It could happen to anyone!"

I turned and headed back to the truck.. I slipped the key into the ignition, but it wouldn't turn. What now? I checked my keys and tried another. Still nothing. That's when I noticed the purple beads hanging from my rearview mirror. I had no purple beads hanging from my rearview mirror.

Then, a few other objects came into focus. The car seat in the back seat. Happy Meal toys spread all over the floorboard. A partially eaten doughnut on the dashboard.

Faster than you can say ginkgo biloba, I flew out of the alien vehicle. Moments later I was speeding out of the parking lot, relieved to finally be leaving this nightmarish stop in my life. That is when I felt it, deep in the bowels of my stomach: hunger! My stomach growled and churned, and I reached to grab my burrito, only it was nowhere to be found.

I swung the truck around, gathered my courage, and strode back into the restaurant one final time. There Emo stood, draped in youth and black nail polish. All I could think was, "What is the world coming to?" All I could say was, "Did I leave my food and drink in here?" At this point I was ready to ask a Boy Scout to help me back to my vehicle, and then go straight home and apply for Social Security benefits..

Emo had no clue. I walked back out to the truck, and suddenly a young lad came up and tugged on my jeans to get my attention. He was holding up a drink and a bag. His mother explained, "I think you left this in my truck by mistake." I took the food and drink from the little boy and sheepishly apologized.

She offered these kind words: "It's OK. My grandfather does stuff like this all the time."

All of this is to explain how I got a ticket doing 85 in a 40. Yes, I was racing some punk kid in a Toyota Prius.. And no, I told the officer, I'm not too old to be driving this fast.

As I walked in the front door, my wife met me halfway down the hall. I handed her a bag of cold food and a $300 speeding ticket. I promptly sat in my rocking chair and covered up my legs with a blanky.

The good news was I had successfully found my way home.

Small Plane Flies Into Austin Texas Office Building

Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

The smoke from the crash could be seen for miles. Two people are unaccounted for but there are no clear reports on whether anyone has died.

Austin, Texas Office building hit by the small plane.
AUSTIN, TX (Catholic Online) - A seven story Federal Building housing, among other tenants, the Internal revenue Service, was the target of what appears to have been an intentional crash of a small plane Thursday morning. The plane hit the lower floor of the building.

Given the nature of the tenants in the building and the times in which we live, the first fear, after concern for the loss of life and injuries, is whether the crash was an act was terrorism.

The smoke from the crash could be seen for miles. Two people are unaccounted for but there are no clear reports on whether anyone is dead.

The Austin Statesman reported: "According to an FBI agent who asked not to be identified because he isn´t authorized to release information, the incident is being investigated as an accident, although eyewitnesses said the plane seemed to come in at full throttle. He said the plane was out of Waco and that Federal Aviation Administration officials are en route to the scene.

"The agent said it was believed the plane had come from Waco, and that witnesses said it had hit the building at full-throttle. FBI sources said that the eyewitness accounts saying that the plane did not slow down is making some authorities wonder if it was an intentional act.

"FBI spokesman Bill Carter said the building hit by a plane at the Echelon office complex did not contain an FBI office. While the FBI has an office at the complex, the plane did not crash into that particular building, Carter said."

Fox news reported: "An NTSB official told Fox News that they are investigating this as an intentional act, and said it appears the pilot set his own house on fire and then got in his plane and flew it into the building. An NTSB spokesman, however, told FoxNews.com that "we can't confirm any of that."

ABC News reported: "Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was promptly briefed on the crash", DHS spokesman Matt Chandler told ABC News.

"The Secretary is aware of the situation in Austin. We do not yet know the cause of the plane crash. At this time, we have no reason to believe there is a nexus to criminal or terrorist activity. We are in the process of coordinating with state officials and other federal partners to gather more information. At this time, we will defer additional questions to local officials and the FAA," Chandler said.

Norad spokesperson John Cornelio told ABC News that two F-16's jets were launched from Ellington Field in Houston after the plane hit the building as "a prudent precaution consistent with our response to recent similar air incidents." The jets are currently flying a combat air patrol over Austin, Cornelio said."

Information on casualties and injuries are not yet available.

On the Moon!

Subject: On the Moon (I never knew this)
How many of you knew? I will have to admit...I didn't.  Too bad this type news doesn't travel as fast as bad.  Communion on the Moon: July 20th, 1969 Jul 19, 2009  Forty years ago today two human beings changed history by walking on the  surface of the moon. But what happened before Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module is perhaps   even more amazing, if only because so few people know about it  I'm talking about the fact that Buzz  Aldrin took communion on the surface of  the moon. Some months after his return,  he wrote about it in Guideposts magazine.  And a few years ago I had the privilege  of meeting him myself. I asked him  about it and he confirmed the story to  me, and I wrote about in my book  Everything You Always Wanted to Know  About God (But Were Afraid to Ask).   The background to the story is that  Aldrin was an elder at his Presbyterian  Church in Texas during this period in his  life, and knowing that he would soon be  doing something unprecedented in human  history, he felt he should mark the  occasion somehow, and he asked his pastor  to help him. And so the pastor  consecrated a communion wafer and a small  vial of communion wine. And Buzz Aldrin  took them with him out of the Earth's  orbit and on to the surface of the moon.  He and Armstrong had only been on the  lunar surface for a few minutes when  Aldrin made the following public  statement: "This is the LM pilot. I'd  like to take this opportunity to ask  every person listening in, whoever and  wherever they may be, to pause for a  moment and contemplate the events of the  past few hours and to give thanks in his  or her own way." He then ended radio  communication and there, on the silent  surface of the moon, 250,000 miles from  home, he read a verse from the Gospel of  John, and he took communion. Here is his  own account of what happened:    "In the radio blackout, I opened the  little plastic packages which contained  the bread and the wine. I poured the wine  into the chalice our church had given me.  In the one-sixth gravity of the moon, the  wine slowly curled and gracefully came up  the side of the cup. Then I read the  scripture, 'I am the vine, you are the  branches. Whosoever abides in me will  bring forth much fruit.. Apart from me  you can do nothing.'  I had intended to read my communion  passage back to earth, but at the last  minute [they] had requested that I not  do this. NASA was already embroiled in  a legal battle with Madelyn Murray  O'Hare, the celebrated opponent of  religion, over the Apollo 8 crew  reading from Genesis while orbiting the  moon at Christmas. I agreed  reluctantly. I ate the tiny Host and  swallowed the wine. I gave thanks for  the intelligence and spirit that had  brought two young pilots to the Sea of  Tranquility .. It was interesting for  me to think: the very first liquid ever  poured on the moon, and the very first  food eaten there, were the communion  element And of course, it's interesting to think  that some of the first words spoken on  the moon were the words of Jesus Christ,  who made the Earth and the moon - and  Who, in the immortal words of Dante, is  Himself the "Love that moves the Sun and  other stars."  WOW!!!!

60 Real Estate Observation!

60 Real Estate Observations: What Would You Add?

CRAWFORD

Network veteran Jim Crawford has learned to accept more than a few facts about helping people buy and sell real estate during his 30-year career. And the Sales Associate with RE/MAX Greater Atlanta in Roswell, Ga., compiled a list of more than 60 of them in a recent blog post.

Based on your experience, what would you add to the list below? E-mail your ideas to editor@remax.net. Please include your first and last name, office name and city, state, province and country.

Real Estate Observations - Perspectives from Experience!

Over the years in real estate business we have to learn something. If not we are fools making the same mistakes over and over again. We all must acknowledge that some homes will sell, and others will not! When you see and sell a lot of homes each year you cannot help but to start connecting the dots. Then, it all starts to make sense. It makes your next deal easier. Unreasonable demands, and not facing the facts at hand can create a tough life in the real estate business. It is smart to build on success, but it is also smart not to build on those things that don't work or will sap you of your time and talent. I made a small list of items that I compiled in my own mind from a career in real estate that I thought I would share:

1.Dirty homes never sell at a good price!

2.Clean homes priced right sell!

3.Never underestimate location: commute, schools, convenience.

4.Curb appeal really does matter!

5.If a home looks really bad on the outside, the inside will be worse!

6.Homes that are not well maintained will cost you.

7.If a home needs work, do it!

8.This is not a market to try a price for a few weeks!

9.You learn a lot when you are listening.

10.The barking dog is really saying, "Do not enter! My bite is worse than my bark!"

11.You make more money in real estate by not working investors!

12.Rejecting bad business is smart business.

13.Dreamers will waste your time! Why not? They are already wasting theirs.

14.It's smart to kennel pets when showing homes.

15.Hope you enjoy your cigarettes more than a "Sold Sign" on the front lawn!

16.Home inspections are a great thing!

17.Never trust a home inspector that refers you to others to get the work done!

18.Home inspectors need to be code certified, licensed, and bonded!

19.Tradesmen need to be licensed and bonded!

20.It is smart to use your senses when buying a home. Pay attention to what you see, smell and hear!

21.Big cracks in masonry, brick, concrete are telling your something. Pay attention to them.

22.Too many homes for sale on the same street may indicate something is happening.

23.It is always a smart idea to further explore the neighborhood, and surrounding community.

24.Peace of mind is priceless!

25.A home warranty is a good thing!

26.Radon tests are a smart idea.

27.Check for termites!

28.A termite bond retreatment repair bond is a great investment

29.It's always smart to get a survey!

30.Always buy buyers title insurance!

31.Use a local lender!

32.Beware of agents that make promises they can't keep!

33.It's not smart to buy a home on a major road or if it backs to a road!

34.Never buy a home under power lines!

35.EIFS / Synthetic Stucco look nice, but they don't sell well.

36."Appointment Only" homes rarely sell quickly at the best price!

37.First offer is usually the best offer!

38.Creative financing usually borders being illegal!

39.If it sounds too good to be true, it is!

40."If I can't sell your home, I'll buy it!" It's a confidence scam!

41.Homes need a backyard for recreation!

42.Lease purchases agreements very seldom if ever work out!

43.Agents that have to be at the home when you show, give me the creeps.

44.Agents do not like to show homes where the security system is on!

45.Never pet animals in a home.

46.Make sure everything you want in a home is in writing, and signed off by all parties.

47.Never trust anyone's word – this is a business transaction. Put it in writing.

48.When in doubt don't proceed forward – seek counsel.

49.If something does not seem right, it isn't! Trust your gut!

50.If you feel uncomfortable, that is a good thing! It is a warning system!

51.If you hire an agent because they are cheap, it's because they are not worth more!

52.A creek in the yard is not necessarily a good thing.

53.Just because the home does not appear to be in a flood zone, doen't mean it isn't!

54.Full-time agents get the best results!

55.Neighborhoods with an Homeowners Association and a pool are more sought after than those without.

56.4 bedroom homes are much better reselling than a 3-bedroom home.

57.Most buyers really don't like loft areas.

58.Neutral colors are easier to sell.

59.There is a difference between "Upgrades and updated!"

60.Sellers should never be in the home when it is being shown!

Thanks, Jim Crawford, for compiling this list. As a 35-year veteran of the industry, I couldn't have said it better. But here are a few more from Pearland Sam:

• When selling your home, listen to your Realtor's advice. The Realtor is there to help you stage and price the home to sell, not keep!

• A professional listing agent requires a long-term commitment because he/she is going to spend money and time to properly market your home and needs a return on his/her investment.

• A listing agent without extensive exposure on the internet does not have a good strategy today.

• A listing agent without a recognizable brand behind him/her, has a lower chance of sale.

• After listing your house for sale, be advised that there is not a steady stream of buyers for all price ranges or for all areas at all times; rather, showing activity will be sporadic. The internet is designed to reduce "foot traffic" through your home by allowing buyers to "weed out" the ones they like and don't like before prancing through them.

• A listing agent who relies on MLS as his/her primary market avenue shouldn't be a listing agent.

• Make a decision! Agents can accept "yes" or "no," but never "maybe" or "let me think about it."

• A buyer agent who tells you, "go look at the house with the listing agent, but come write the contract with me" should be pistol-whipped (or simply out of the real estate industry, if you don't like my expression).

• A buyer agent who eagerly throws you in the car and shows you anything you want to see without explaining their duties and asking for a commitment first will not be in the business long.

The Taliban's top military leader captured!

Washington (CNN) -- The Taliban's top military leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has been captured, senior U.S. and Pakistani officials told CNN.

This is a "huge deal," CNN National Security Analyst Peter Bergen said. "This guy ... is the number two political figure in the Taliban" to the group's founder Mullah Muhammad Omar.

Baradar, an Afghan, was arrested in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, a senior Pakistani intelligence official said. The official asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Baradar was a close associate of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden ahead of the September 11 attacks on the United States. Bergen said Baradar also would have been in regular contact with Omar.

American and Pakistani intelligence officials are taking part in interrogations, a senior Pakistani intelligence official said.

"The critical issue is how much will he talk and provide information on ... where the Taliban in Pakistan are and ... where Osama bin Laden is," said Robin Wright, a fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Sen. John Kerry, who is in the region meeting with leaders, called the arrest a key development in U.S.-Pakistani relations.

"It is evidence of a new level of cooperation that is very, very important," said Kerry, D-Massachusetts. "It's very clear to me that the Pakistanis understand that this fight is for them, and it's a fight for everybody who is going to stand up against terrorism."

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, denied that Baradar has been captured. He said Baradar is continuing his operations and is still in Afghanistan.

Another Afghan Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, also denied Baradar had been arrested. He told CNN the report is intended to demoralize the Afghan Taliban during the Marjah offensive.

Some 15,000 Afghan and NATO forces are battling the Taliban in Marjah in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province in Operation Moshtarak.

You Are Loved!

You Are Loved!

From the messages of Adrian Rogers

BIBLE MEDITATION:

Jeremiah 31:3 - “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love.”

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

Valentine’s Day is a day for lovers. Did you know that Jesus is the lover of your soul? He is. As part of the church, you are His bride…His chosen one. Our Lord loves us with an infinite love, an everlasting love, and an indescribable love. Are you without a valentine today? Take heart…His heart. He has set His affection on you. Jesus has purchased you, not with silver or gold as a bridegroom would have in Jesus’ day, but our Lord has purchased you with the silver of His tears and with the gold of His blood. You are loved!

ACTION POINT:

Every time you get a Valentine or see an advertisement for Valentine’s Day or hear someone say, “Happy Valentine’s Day,” remember that Jesus is the Lover of your Soul.

Obama's plan!

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had once failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A....

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

Sorry to bother you, Sir!

------------------------------------------------------------

As only Colombo could do it......

Ah, sorry to bother you Mr. Obama, Sir. . ...

Excuse me Mr. Obama, I mean President Obama, Sir. Um . . I know you're busy, and important and stuff. I mean, running the country is very important and -- ah -- I hate to bother you, Sir. I will only take a minute. Ok, Sir?

See, I have these missing pieces that are holding me up, and I was wondering, Sir, if you could take time out of your busy schedule and help me out. You know, no big deal, just some loose ends and things.

Hey, you have a nice place here! The wife sees houses like this on TV all the time and says, boy, she wishes she had digs like this, you know? Is that painting real? Really? Wow!

I saw something like that in a museum once.

Oh, sorry Sir. I didn't mean to get off the track.

So if you could just help me out a minute and give me some details, I will get right out of your way. I want to close this case and maybe take the wife to Coney Island or something. Ever been to Coney Island Sir? No? I didn't think so....

Well, listen, anyway, I can't seem to get some information I need to wrap this up. These things seem to either be "Not released" or "Not available." I'm sure it's just an oversight or glitch or something, so if you could you tell me where these things are I have them written down here somewhere -- oh wait. I'll just read it to you.

Could you please help me find these things, Sir?

1. Occidental College records -- Not released

2.. Columbia College records -- Not released

3. Columbia Thesis paper -- "Not available"

4. Harvard College records -- Not released

5. Selective Service Registration -- Not released

6. Medical records -- Not released

7. Illinois State Senate schedule -- Not available

8. Your Illinois State Senate records -- Not available

9. Law practice client list -- Not released

10. Certified Copy of original Birth certificate -- Not released

11. Embossed, signed paper Certification of Live Birth -- Not released

12. Record of your baptism -- Not available

13. Why your wife, Michelle, can no longer practice law as an attorney? (Insurance Fraud?

14. Why your wife has 22 assistants, when other First Ladies had one?

15. Why were you getting "foreign student aid" as a college student?

16. Which countries "passport" did you have when you visited Pakistan in 1981?

Oh and one more thing Mr. President, I can't seem to find any articles you published as editor of the Harvard Law Review, or as a Professor at the University of Chicago. Can you explain that to me, Sir?

Oh, but hey -- listen! I know you're busy! If this is too much for you right now -- I mean -- tell you what. I'll come back tomorrow. Give you some time to get these things together, you know? I mean, I know you're busy. I'll just let myself out. I'll be back tomorrow. And the day after. .. ...

What's that Mr. President? Who wants to know these things? We the People of the United States of America ! You know, the ones that vote.

ACORN and other leftist groups eligible to get nearly $4 billion!!!

ACORN and other leftist groups eligible to get nearly $4 billion in Obama's fiscal 2011 budget

By anathhartmann on Feb. 10, 2010 into Water Cooler
To add to the list of outrageous earmarks in Obama's fiscal 2011 budget, it appears left-wing activist groups including ACORN, the embezzlement-prone, voter-registration-fraud-plagued community organizing group, are eligible to receive up to $3.99 billion in taxpayer-backed slush money.

The funds would come indirectly from the Community Development Block Grant, one of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's longest-running programs. The grant money goes to state and local governments. ACORN and other groups can apply for part of it directly from a local municipality in which an arm of their group is active.

"In that sense, ACORN gets lots of money from the CDBG program--but it is nearly impossible to track it because HUD doesn't track all the money" after it has gone to local and state governments, said Matthew Vadum, a senior editor at Capital Research Center. "Nobody knows how much ACORN, which has hundreds of different affiliates, has actually received over the years in CDBG funding."

In the past ACORN has also even received matching funds "from other sources" when it has gotten CDBG money, Vadum said. According to a 1997 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article, ACORN added $250,000 in matching funds to a $50,500 contract the ACORN Fair Housing Program received "to help low- and moderate-income families buy homes."

The HUD Web site cryptically defines the grant's purpose as providing "communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs," not a reassuring description given the group's recent past history of aiding the community through gratuitous misappropriation of funds.

Has Congress already forgotten the Sept. 2009 ban it passed on ACORN and ACORN-affiliate funding? Or the video that led to the ban, footage showing ACORN employees urging individuals they thought were a prostitute and her pimp to set up a brothel and advising the pair on evading taxpaying? It would have had a hard time doing so, considering that ACORN is currently suing the federal government for the attempted ban.

Though the largely Democratic House Appropriations Committee voted against the block last December, it is a Bill Clinton-appointee, U.S. District Court Judge Nina Gershon, who has truly aided the corrupt ACORN cause. Also in December, Gershon issued a temporary injunction against the Congressional funding ban, crying that it ran afoul of the Constitution because under it, ACORN was "singled out by Congress for punishment that directly and immediately affects their ability to continue to obtain federal funding, in the absence of any judicial, or even administrative, process adjudicating guilt."

In essence, Gershon has said ACORN can't be punished now because the Obama administration failed to punish it earlier--through a long-overdue, much-needed criminal investigation into the group. But this is absurd, because ACORN is not entitled to such funding; it is a gift, not a right. Congress has the right to cancel contracts whenever it feels like it.

Just ask Blackwater, a company we are wondering whether Gershon would so heroically rush to defend were it to make the same move ACORN is now making.

The next generation of explorers to walk on the moon or Mars could be called robonauts. They may perform similar scientific tasks to astronauts, but wouldn't require any of the life support equipment or shelter. The first robonaut could travel to the space station to work side by side with astronauts in the next three years, if plans at NASA come to fruition.

NASA and General Motors are developing the first of these humanoid robots, called Robonaut2. Unlike NASA's Mars rovers, Robonaut2 is designed to closely mimic the shape, movement, and behavior of a human. This could make it ideally suited to working alongside humans, or for testing human spacecraft and living quarters, but it also presents some unique engineering challenges. GM hopes to use the robots in its manufacturing plants and to incorporate the resulting technology into some of its products, including vehicle safety systems.

The engineers behind Robonaut2 began working on the robot in 2007; its design originated from a version that NASA created more than 10 years ago.

Robonaut2 currently consists of just an upper torso. It weighs about 45 kilograms and is equipped with over 350 sensors. These include tactile sensors on the contact points of the robot's fingers and its palms, and proximity sensors in its arms. Engineers have also built springs and elastic materials in the joints to give the robot better control and flexibility, and to allow it to move at faster, more humanlike speeds. The robot can carry payloads of about nine kilograms--four times more than other humanoid robots.

Rob Ambrose, chief of the Software, Robotics and Simulation Division at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, says the new robot is a significant improvement over its predecessor. "It's designed to operate at a speed and scale similar to humans, and when it encounters people it complies and safely works with them," he says.

The technology needed to perceive humans and respond to human action is particularly important, and this is something that researchers all over the world are working on, says Matthew Mason, a professor of robotics and computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Robonaut2 is an important platform for developing and testing such techniques, he adds.

Another key challenge is enabling Robonaut2 to communicate effectively with astronauts. "This is really a new area," adds Bilge Mutlu, an assistant professor in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a member of the human computer interaction lab at CMU. "How does a robot interpret social cues? How does it communicate back? We want robots to be team members, and the new work is a step in that direction." For the moment, Robonaut2 is limited to communicating with humans in simple ways. For example, when it points its head toward something, it is a cue that the human working alongside the robot should look in that direction.

Robonaut2 has 42 degrees of freedom and is highly dexterous, says Ambrose. "We added more range of motion by giving it an opposable thumb and making the manipulators much faster," he says. The robot also has two standard and two high-definition cameras embedded inside the gold helmet that covers its head. This provides stereoscopic, 3-D images of its surroundings, which the robot uses to build a depth map of objects nearby. It also has a number of indicator lights that give astronauts a general understanding of what state the robot is in. And the robot can sense very light contact; if a person touches it anywhere it can stop instantly, to protect them from harm. Its outer skin is also made of soft, smooth materials so that if an astronaut does bump into it, she will not be harmed.

The new robot is designed to work autonomously, using feedback from sensors to complete set tasks. "In addition to building new robotic hardware, one of the main challenges is writing software to make robots smart enough to do things by themselves," says Andrew Ng, a professor of computer science at Stanford University, who works on developing general-purpose household robots.

Ambrose says that NASA wants to use the robot for a number of different missions, including trips to the space station to conduct repair work, and missions to the moon or Mars as a precursor mission to manned ones. When it's part of a human-robot team, the robot could even be left behind to continue scientific work. But Mason adds that the robot is still very young, and there is lots of work to be done. "Human performance is a high bar, and while robots have not come close to it, every advance of this kind is very important," he says.

Pelosi Makes Her Case: A Majority Is 51 Votes!!!

By Steven T. Dennis

Roll Call Staff

Feb. 10, 2010, 2:08 p.m.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is pinning the blame on Republicans for a lack of bipartisanship in Congress and plans to bypass them if they continue to oppose efforts to enact near-universal health care.

“A constitutional majority is 51 votes,” Pelosi said in an interview Tuesday with Roll Call. “If in fact the Republicans are going to say nothing can be done except by 60 percent, then maybe we all should be elected with 60 percent. It isn’t legitimate in terms of passing legislation.”

Pelosi has been wary of publicly giving advice to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) or President Barack Obama, but it’s no secret that House Democrats have been increasingly frustrated at the dysfunction on the opposite side of the building.

“There is some unease when you talk about, well, what’s happening to the initiatives to help the American people?” Pelosi said. “Is there never anything that can be done without 60 votes?”

The shattering of the 60-vote Democratic Senate supermajority with the election of Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) has revived talk among Democrats of bypassing filibusters, and Pelosi has forcefully argued for doing just that to complete work on the party’s stalled health care package.

The Speaker, who oversaw her chamber’s passage of a $1.2 trillion health care bill last fall, has repeatedly balked at White House suggestions following Brown’s election that the House merely accept the Senate’s version of the overhaul and has been pushing the Senate to adopt a host of changes through a separate, filibuster-proof budget reconciliation bill.

In her interview with Roll Call, Pelosi stopped short of saying the filibuster should be done away with altogether, but she used some of her bluntest language yet to defend the use of reconciliation as something that has been used with regularity by Republican and Democratic presidents alike.

“We have set the stage for that. It’s important for us to remind the American people of the inconsistency that the Republicans have in saying this is unusual. No, five times President Bush used it. ... This is what the Republicans did to pass their bills, their tax cuts for the rich,” Pelosi said.

“It’s up to us to make sure the public knows that this is not extraordinary. And the public knows that a constitutional majority is 51. It would be a reflection on us if we could not convince people that this is not an unusual place to go.”

And Pelosi complained about the never-ending filibusters by Senate Republicans going far beyond the health care debate.

“Yes, the filibuster has its place, it may even have its place in health care — it’s a very big issue. But does it have its place on every appointment and every piece of legislation? We have over 200 bills over there that haven’t been taken up. Most of them, 70 percent of them, were passed with over 50 Republican votes in the House. ...

“We haven’t gotten as much done as we should and one of those reasons is because of what the Republicans are doing. ... The American people have to make a judgment about the conduct of the Republicans in insisting on that on every vote, and the Democrats in the Senate have to deal with the challenge that they have.”

She declined to criticize Obama, who many rank-and-file House Democrats have complained hasn’t pushed the Senate hard enough during the health care debate.

“We want a bill,” she said. “Without the president’s leadership we would not be as close as we are. We are in the red zone.

“This is very doable. ...

“Our responsibility is to be ready for compromise, to find common ground so we can move forward with health care, and I think that we will.”

Pelosi also said she is open to Republicans presenting new ideas at the Feb. 25 bipartisan health care summit called for by Obama, but she said she’s already seen the Republican health care alternative offered on the House floor and said it only provided insurance for an additional 3 million people instead of the more than 30 million in the Democratic bill.

Pelosi also defended her party’s record on bipartisanship, saying Democrats accepted 15 Republican amendments to the House health care bill.

“Whatever the good idea comes from if it works for the American people, we are receptive to that,” she said. But she said Democrats did not plan to “throw our people to the wolves when it came to their health.”

Beyond health care reform, however, Pelosi said Democrats have shown they know how to work across the aisle. For instance, she said it was Democrats who helped President George W. Bush get some of his top priorities done including an energy package, a stimulus tax credit bill and the Trouble Asset Relief Program.

“This whole thing of bipartisanship is sort of a new thing for [Republicans], because they weren’t even for their own president on the TARP. A minority of the minority voted for that,” she said.

Still, Pelosi was confident Democrats and Republicans will align on a jobs package.

“It’s easier to find common ground because everybody wants to create jobs,” Pelosi said. “Clearly everybody does not want to have, believe that we should have universal access to quality health care for all Americans,” she said.

Bill Clinton keeps 'frenetic pace'

"While he eats a lot better than he used to," he still indulges, one friend tells CNN

"Ought to be two Bill Clintons in order to keep up the pace he does," says David Gergen

(CNN) -- Though Bill Clinton has received lots of attention for getting healthy since his 2004 heart surgery -- losing weight, exercising more, improving his diet -- associates of the former president Thursday stressed that Clinton continues to live at a breakneck pace and raised questions about the extent of his lifestyle changes.

"While he eats a lot better than he used to," one friend tells CNN, "he certainly indulges every once in a while consistent with past behavior -- [for example] fries with his fish."

"He still works long days and stays up very, very late," the friend said. "He has gone from a frenetic pace to what most people would consider a frenetic pace. He's approaching Social Security, and he's living a life not that different from his 30s."

After undergoing quadruple bypass operation on four blocked arteries in 2004, word spread that Clinton had reformed the lifestyle that was immortalized in "Saturday Night Live" skits about the then-president jogging to McDonald's.

When Clinton left the White House, his cholesterol level was 233, well above the recommended upper threshold of 200. And his so-called bad cholesterol jumped 40 points during his final year in office, to around 177 -- about 50 points above normal.

After his surgery, Clinton stepped up his advocacy for fighting obesity. In 2005, he announced he was partnering with the American Heart Association to fight rising childhood obesity rates.

The following year, he appeared before the National Governors Association to urge state executives to fight rising obesity rates, mentioning his McDonald's habit and wishing out loud for the fast-food chain's french fries to be cooked in olive oil.

Even while crusading against obesity and appearing trimmer than in his White House days, however, Clinton has shied away from discussing lifestyle reforms since his surgery.

"I ate a lot of stuff that was high in fat. ... I ate a lot of it," the former president told CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, as he described his life before surgery in a 2005 interview. "And you know, I just didn't think about it. And I didn't have regular exercise."

But Clinton has avoided giving details about his post-surgery diet and exercise routine.

Friends say Clinton introduced healthier foods to his diet but hasn't written off fries and steaks entirely. And they stressed that his schedule is as nonstop as ever, with the president frequently skipping sleep until his next plane trip.

"[The] whole time I have known him -- goes back 20 years -- he's led a hectic life," said former Clinton adviser and CNN analyst David Gergen. "[There] ought to be two Bill Clintons in order to keep up the pace he does. I think it has been especially relentless in the last few months."

Clinton's role as the United Nations special envoy for Haiti has taken him twice to the earthquake-ravaged nation and he is leading efforts to raise money for the hard-hit area.

Douglas Band, a counselor to the former president, said Thursday -- citing the former president's doctors -- that the symptoms that provoked Clinton's hospitalization weren't related to work, diet or cholesterol.

While keeping mostly mum on lifestyle changes, Clinton has opened up about his lifelong struggle with weight since undergoing surgery. In announcing the American Heart Association partnership in 2005, for instance, Clinton disclosed that he weighed 210 pounds by the time he was 15.

"I was probably in the last generation of Americans where people widely thought a fat baby was a healthy baby," Clinton told CNN's Gupta. "I always battled my weight, all of the way through school."

In a series of 2007 ads for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, Clinton poked fun at his weight struggles. One spot showed the former president daydreaming about a cheese burger while running on a treadmill. "Exercising is hard," a voice in the ad said, comparing it to the ease of attending an Iowa caucus.

Hey Gang,

I just wanted to let you all know that prior to great friends and fellow American Patriots Shane and Angel from BAWNEY FRWANKK. District referring Mr. Messina to me for Interview, that I did make every effort to contact for many months now Mr. Earl Sholley who is running in the same race.

With respect to Mr. Sholley, the fact remains that my several emails and messages to Mr. Sholley's office have gone completely unanswered to this day. It was Mr. Messina who first contacted me with reply to referral by Shane and Angel. So, I have gone ahead and scheduled Mr. Messina.

This has angered some of you and caused some interesting emails to come to my inbox. Even though I have Mr. Messina on air with me on Friday Night, I will grant the request from some of those who are very good friends of mine, the future air time also to Mr. Sholley on a later show for fair and balance equal time. However, Mr. Sholley is going to have to contact me first at this point.

I do sincerely hope that I have not offended Mr. Messina with this. Nor, anyone else for that matter with a promise to grant time to more than one candidate running in the same race on the same party. However, I only became aware of Mr. Messina just a month or so ago.

Still it is the fact again that Mr. Sholley has yet to contact me. So, by this proclamation I am going to as part of this fight against one of the most radical and no class Congressmen we've ever had in Washington D.C. in Barney Frank (D-MA) going to continue to press forward on the field of battle to retake our Republic of these United States of America and name my support and endorsement for Keith Messina who in my mind has shown the most active in outreach to the voters and especially in the most struggling communities of the District he is seeking to represent. If I lived in that struggling District and had to choose between Keith Messina and Barney Frank, I tell you all know I would choose Keith Messina over Bawney FRWANK any day.

This being with respect to Mr. Sholley who still after months of inquiring emails to his Campaign Staff in the professional manner likewise, he has not shown me his stuff. At this point in time, Mr. Messina has shown me a lot already.

Please don't think I am a hater of Mr. Earl Sholley. Because, that is clearly not my intentions with this. My intention is to set the record straight with my friends and patriots who are supporters of Mr. Sholley.

Again, my Interview with Keith Messina (R-MA) on Wake Up America - Time For A Revolution Now (Radio Show) on http://wapr.fm All American Patriots Radio Network, is at 9:00 PM Eastern Time. Please come listen live and hear what he has to say about where America has been heading, and what his plan is to go about doing his part to do something about it. I know many of you are Earl Sholley friends as am I on Facebook only, and those of you who are supporters. Just remember to come listen to my Friday Night show at 9pm Eastern and keep and open mind as there are other Candidates out there. Mr. Keith Messina is one Candidate I do feel all of you need to at least hear his point of view out!

History of Haiti

History of Haiti.

Here is a little history lesson! Probably not taught in our schools today. (they wouldn't think about it!).

In the 1700's what is now Haiti was called the "Jewel of the Caribbean," and supplied about 40% of the world's sugar.

In 1791 the government of France passed legislation to phase out slavery in its Caribbean colonies and grant the former Negro slaves citizenship. But rather than becoming citizens, Haiti's Negro population mass murdered all whites and Mulattoes who could not flee the Island in time. In 1804 only full blooded Negroes remained, and Haiti became the first Negro ruled nation.

The Haitian revolution dominated America's debate over slavery. While both the north and the south agreed that slavery should be ended, southerners and a large percentage of northerners universally opposed having a large population of freed slaves living in their midst. The Haitian "Revolution" was fresh in everyone's mind.

Flash forward to 1915. The "Jewel of the Caribbean" is now a desolate cesspool, that is exporting almost no sugar. The United States decides to "take up the white man's burden" and send the US Marine Corps to rebuild Haiti's infrastructure and feed its starving population. The United States gave huge amounts of money to Haiti and over-saw the building of 1,000 miles of road, telephone lines, modernized its port, and helped Haiti to start exporting sugar once again. The US also put an end to the thousands of bandits along Hait's border with the Dominican Republic. The US left in 1934 at the request of the then stabilized and very ungrateful Haitian government.

Haiti immediately sank straight back into total desolation strife. In 1973 the United States once again began playing a huge role in Haiti, giving the Island huge sums of money in handouts each year.

In 1994 the Clinton administration once again sent the US military to Haiti to rebuild the Island's infrastructure. In 1995 the Peace Corps then went to Haiti in large numbers to train the Haitians in job skills. The US government spent almost one Billion providing food and job training to the Haitians between '95 and '99.

So when Obama says that Haiti has our "full, unwavering, support", they have already had our full support since 1915 ... and the results?

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

“Do you think a Jew without Jesus is lost?”

"Ready to Give an Answer
from the messages of Adrian Rogers

BIBLE MEDITATION:
1 Peter 3:15 - “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Sometimes during an interview, a reporter may ask me, “Do you think a Jew without Jesus is lost?” If I say, “Yes,” then I will look like a racist or a bigot. If I say, “No,” then, I have dishonored the Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for the sins of all people. So how do I answer? I say, “Friend, I believe that one of my own children without Jesus would be lost. It doesn’t matter whether he’s a Jew or a Gentile. You see, God demands absolute perfection and none of us can provide it. That’s why we need the gospel. We need Jesus. We need the righteousness of God that comes by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

ACTION POINT:
What would you say if someone asked you that question? Ask the Lord to prepare you."

CHAIRMAN OF JOINT CHIEFS DEMANDS HOMOSEXUALS LIE TO MILITARY

Tuesday the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen deceived the Senate Armed Services Committee, repeating President Obama's demand to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) prohibition against open homosexual aggression within the ranks of the military. "We have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens," Admiral Mullen fibbed, revealing his personal belief that "allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do."

Sadly, the pro-homosexual Mullen has believed the lies of homosexual propaganda, and deceived himself, and now deceived Congress, all the while claiming he wants a more honest policy that discourages lying, when in fact Mullen actually demands homosexuals tell more lies to their military commanders when enlisting as open homosexuals. Here's a simple proof: Men who were created by God with male body parts are not women, and they lie to themselves, the world, and their commanders when they pretend to be, and act like, women. Women who were created by God with female parts are not men, and they lie to themselves, the world, and their commanders when they pretend to be, and act like, men.

Mullen's confused argument would permit men to deceptively act like women, and women to deceptively act like men, openly deceiving themselves, the world, and their military commanders, and boldface lying against God's very truth, that He created men to be men, and women to be women. But today's confusing homosexual propaganda equates "honesty" with men openly flaunting their femininity, and "truthfulness" with women openly flaunting masculinity. Who's really telling God's truth?

The Bible describes homosexual liars: "Who changed the truth of God into a lie...women did change the natural use into that which is against nature, and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error." (Romans 1). Thank God Senator John McCain (R-AZ) denounced the Admiral's deceptive plan as destructive to the military, but Senator McCain needs your help to fight this open perversion, and protect our troops from open homosexual aggression...

CBS news interviewed homosexual Army Lt. Dan Choi, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who currently faces discharge for publicly announcing he's gay.

"I think it's a very healthy thing for people to be able to tell the truth and to come to terms with who they are. I think it's a sign of maturity," Choi said, "At my very first day at West Point, I learned that the honor code says a cadet will not lie, will not tolerate those who lie," said Choi. "They didn't say that a cadet who was gay could lie whereas straight cadets didn't have to lie."

As a USAF Academy graduate knowing the honor code, I now personally confront Choi as a liar, who now openly violates his honor oath, since he deceives himself and the world, by claiming to be feminine, when God created him masculine, with a male body. LIAR. Choi should immediately be thrown out of the Army, not merely for sexual perversion, but for DISHONESTY AND LYING. The only reason he graduated West Point is that he never lied by openly claiming to be feminine while a cadet, when God created him to be masculine. THIS PROVES DON'T ASK DON'T TELL IS THE MOST HONEST POLICY, because it encourages people with sexual perversions not to openly lie about their sexual identity. But if DADT is repealed by Congress, men will claim to be women, and women will claim to be men, and the open season of dishonesty and lying will begin.

President Obama pledged in his State of the Union Address to promote open homosexual aggression within the ranks of the military, by directly recruiting Congressmen and Senators in 2010 to overturn the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law that saves troops lives and already guarantees equality. Ignoring a letter signed by over 1,150 retired military flag and general officers, who asked Obama to enforce the 1993 Clinton-era law that currently prohibits open homosexual aggression in the military, Obama instead sacrificed military readiness, unit cohesion, and safety of all American troops, to prioritize his special relationship with less than 1% of the American population who claimed to be homosexual in the last census.

"This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay men and women the right to serve the country they love," Obama boldly misled, repeating the vow he made during a speech Oct. 10th before a gay rights group. (The truth is homosexuals already now have the right to serve, so long as they keep their sexual aggression to themselves.) "If you adhere to our common values, you should be treated no different than anyone else," Obama said oxymoronically, defining "equality" and "values" as a sudden endorsement of illegal acts of sod omy long banned by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The Joint Chiefs sat stone-faced silent, aghast at Obama's plan, but powerless to publicly oppose their own Commander-In-Chief. We must be their voice...

As a former Navy Chaplain and Air Force Academy graduate, having served during wartime combat operations, in close quarters with Sailors onboard a combat cruiser, and having personally counseled both straight and homosexual sericemembers, I can personally attest the last thing our Sailors need is a lack of trust or suspicion toward their fellow shipmates. Our uniformed servicemembers very lives depend daily on their ability to trust each other, without worry about being ogled, made advances upon, or violated by those with whom they share common sleeping quarters and showering facilities, 24/7 both on and off duty. Friends, do you care about protecting our military's trust, unit cohesion, and saving our troops lives? Take action today...

Kevin Nix, spokesman for the pro-homosexual Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which is spearheading the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal effort, told the Washington Times the House bill now has 182 co-sponsors, just short of a majority. "We're just trying to get to 218 to show that the bill is ready," said Mr. Nix, who added that senators plan to introduce a bill shortly.

"We expect a bill introduction for the first time in 16 years," he said. "We definitely expect a hearing this year. There are still things that need to happen, but we are definitely on the brink of a bill in the Senate. We want repeal done in 2010. Done, to the president's desk for a signature." A spokesman for pro-homosexual Congressman Patrick J. Murphy (D-PA), who is leading the repeal campaign in the House, said he has commitments from 16 members in addition to the 182 co-sponsors, totaling 198 votes, just short of a majority.

In the Pentagon however, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James T. Conway has emerged in internal deliberations as the most outspoken opponent of permitting gay men and women to serve openly in the U.S. military, according to the Washington Times.

"Most of the senior brass hold deep reservations about President Obama's pledge to end the ban on gays in the military, especially in the middle of two wars that have put extra stress on the military, down to the platoon level, where soldiers and Marines would be expected to bond with openly gay colleagues," the Times reported.

WHY KEEP OPEN HOMOSEXUALITY OUT OF THE MILITARY?

Four reasons: 1) Allowing open homosexuality especially hurts unit cohesion and would cost American lives in war, damaging the trust shared in close proximity, common sleeping quarters and showering facilities that are unavoidable in close combat. 2) Men and women do not share the same showers for obvious reasons, so why force men to share showers with openly homosexual men? This fact alone would hurt recruiting. 3) The rampant spread of the HIV-AIDS virus contaminates the blood often shared by necessity on the battlefield. Soldiers requiring blood-transfusions and medics would be immediately endangered. 4) "Gay promotion quotas" would soon be forced upon presently impartial promotion boards, causing a burdensome rise in sexually-charged "equal opportunity" complaints against commanders, especially those who offend gays by inadvertently speaking of their traditional Judeo-Christian faith.

But Marine Commandant General Conway has gone further than others in stating his opposition to a change in policy, according to a former official who was privy to private conversations on the matter. "He feels very strongly that [removing the ban] would be disruptive, and he opposes it," he said. But if Congress changes the law, the General must implement the law.

Obama campaigned during his election to end "don't ask, don't tell," the policy signed into law by President Clinton. The policy ended the practice of asking prospective recruits about their sexuality, allowing homosexuals to freely serve, but prohibited openly gay men and women from talking about their sexual urges while serving. Repeal would allow them to share their sexual urges with their fellow soldiers, creating needless and divisive tension in the ranks.

The House Armed Services Committee will likely hold a hearing on a repeal bill in the spring, meaning the earliest floor vote could come before the middle of 2010, as part of the 2011 Defense Armed Services Authorization or Appropriations spending bill. Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee had planned a hearing in 2009, but none was scheduled. The White House will likely soon submit a repeal bill to the Hill.

The four-star chiefs of the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Army have said little on the topic in public and have not been pressed by Congress to provide their professional opinions. All four declined to answer when asked for their personal opinions on the ban by The Washington Times, except to say they will abide by the law. They've been silenced for fear of upsetting Obama, who would likely force their immediate retirement.

"They are not going to talk until it's time to talk," said a senior officer inside the Pentagon, who added the chiefs will discuss any specific legislative proposal in private with the chain of command - meaning Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and the president.

Adm. Mullen, who as Joint Chiefs chairman is the president's top military adviser, has expressed concern about carrying out the president's wish. "I think it's important, as we look to this change, that it be done in a way that doesn't disrupt the force at a time where it's under a lot of stress," Adm. Mullen told the Military Times in May. "And that, to me, means in a measured, deliberate way, over some time -- to be determined. And I don't know what that would be." (I know how and when....never risk our troops lives.)

The Times reports Gay rights groups cite recent polls that show the public now supports repealing the ban, unlike in 1993, when polls showed the opposite. That year, Congress stopped Mr. Clinton's bid to change what was then only a regulation. He ended up signing the ban into law. The Pentagon discharged 633 men and women under the ban in fiscal year 2008.

Elaine Donnelly, who heads the Center for Military Readiness and argues in favor of the ban, pointed a reporter toward a recent article she wrote for the American Thinker.

"Consistently small numbers and percentages of people discharged due to homosexuality contradict any claim that a national security emergency justifies repeal of the law," she wrote. "And it is not convincing to hold up the small, dissimilar militaries of foreign nations, none of which have adopted the extreme agenda being proposed for our military, as role models for America's forces. Nor does it help to ignore the stated opinions of more than 1,150 retired flag and general officers and current military personnel." Our military is not a grounds for new and radical social experiementation, especially ones that endanger lives.

"Only One Life Ever Lived to Perfection
from the messages of Adrian Rogers

BIBLE MEDITATION:
Revelation 4:8 - “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
There has never been a man like the Lord Jesus. I was deeply stirred by these words, written by John Phillips about Jesus: “He never uttered a hasty, unkind, untrue, or frivolous word. He never entertained an impure thought. His talents never debased for selfish ends. His influence, never bad. His judgment, never wrong. He never had to apologize for anything He did or retract a single word He said. He was never too late or too soon, never upset, never insipid, never shallow or afraid ... He had absolute victory from the moment He drew his first breath in that Bethlehem barn until the moment He closed His eyes in death on the cross of Calvary.”

ACTION POINT:
If you’re looking for a hero, let me suggest mine. His name is Jesus."

The "Over 50's" & their Job Search Tactics!

Like most folks, I love to read other people’s success stories, especially when they involve the individuals in question trying something new, something that they might not previously have felt comfortable with. Yesterday’s Chicago Tribune ran just such a story about three over 50s who each stepped out of their comfort zones to either find work or help focus their job search.

For 58 year-old Leah Alexander, December was the month when her job with a non-profit organization came to an end after 14 years. In a wild departure from her degree subject of Human Resources, she is using her severance pay to set up in business teaching yoga and distributing organic skin care products, and is also setting up an alliance of environmentalists and practitioners of alternative remedies.

After losing his job in sales a few years ago, meanwhile, Rex Smith, in fine networking style, finally reached out to a neighbor. Although his enquiry was directly in relation to further work in sales, when his friend got back to him it was to ask if he would help him launch a franchise business. Now 60 years of age, Rex and his business partner now run a gourmet ham shop.

Bruce Gilmour, who is 68 years old, went back to basics after losing his position in logistics management in June, and not only took advantage of the free year’s membership of a networking organization which came as part of his severance package, but also began evaluating his career strengths in order to find his direction. He didn’t just write about his accomplishments in general, however, but about those which had given him true enjoyment. As he did so, it became evident that his real passion lie in training others in new processes, and so he is now targeting his job search in the direction of organizations which would enable him to help adults with physical or mental challenges to improve their job skills.

In my book, these three individuals set a great example to job seekers everywhere in that they have embraced modern day tactics despite their respective ages. Identifying their career passions, networking, targeting employers and looking beyond the ‘safe’ option of working for others all figured in their approaches, and all three certainly go to prove what I have often said, that age is no barrier. Well done to all three, and the very best of luck!

Brown sworn in as US Senator from Massachusetts

Brown sworn in as US Senator from Massachusetts

By ANDREW MIGA
The Associated Press
Thursday, February 4, 2010; 6:24 PM

WASHINGTON -- Republican Scott Brown took over the seat of the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy on Thursday, vowing to be an independent voice in a bitterly divided Senate.

"I can't promise I will be right in every vote I make. ... I will do the very best job I can," Brown told reporters.

Brown was sworn-in by Vice President Joe Biden at a Capitol Hill ceremony a week earlier than he originally planned, and just in time to plunge into a partisan fight over President Barack Obama's choice of a union attorney for a top labor job.

Brown's arrival in the Senate ends the Democrats' supermajority and gives the GOP 41 votes they can use to block President Barack Obama's agenda.

At a news conference, Brown made an assertion about the last economic stimulus bill that most economists would dispute.

"The last stimulus bill didn't create one new job," Brown said in response to a question about a jobs bill pending in the Senate. He added that the stimulus may have retained some jobs.

Republicans have questioned the way the Obama administration has counted jobs created or saved with stimulus money. But most economists believe new jobs were created even though unemployment rates rose.

Depending on how Democrats set the Senate's calendar, Brown's first vote could be against the confirmation of Craig Becker, a lawyer for the Service Employees International Union, to a seat on the National Labor Relations Board, the federal panel that referees private sector labor-management disputes.

Brown said he hasn't decided on whether to support Becker.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee approved Becker's nomination on a party-line 13-10 vote Thursday, sending it to the full Senate.

Republicans have held up Becker's confirmation for months, saying they fear he might use the post to make labor laws more union-friendly without congressional approval.

Brown, 50, a little-known former state senator, stunned the nation with his upset victory last month over favored Democrat Martha Coakley and put the 2010 midterm elections in play for a possible GOP takeover of Congress. Brown's win derailed Obama's health care overhaul and catapulted Brown onto the national stage.

On Wednesday, Brown said he wanted to move up the swearing-in so that he could participate in upcoming Senate votes. On Thursday morning, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick certified the results of Brown's win, clearing the way for him to take the oath of office.

Conservative radio hosts and newspaper columnists had pressed for Brown to take office earlier.

Former Democratic Party Chairman Paul Kirk had been holding the seat temporarily after being appointed by Patrick after Kennedy's death.

Brown will fill the last two years of the late Kennedy's term. Kennedy held the seat for nearly a half-century before he died in August.
